Thomas Moyo, aged 21 (This name has been changed at the request of the interviewee.)
Thomas came to Ireland from Harare, Zimbabwe after his house and family were targeted by Zanu-PF activists for supporting the opposition MDC party in March 2002. His brother has since obtained a British passport (having been born in the UK) and has moved to England, and Thomas's mother has joined his brother there. Thomas cannot join them because asylum system rules forbid him leaving the country and making an application for asylum in the UK. If he is deported, he will be barred from re-entering the EU.
He was refused asylum and applied for leave to remain two years ago, but has not yet had a response. "I'm a big music lover and I'm working on being a DJ," he says. "People here are coming to accept that there are foreigners in the country. If I stay here, I think that I have a lot to offer this country and this country has a lot to offer me."
