VOLUNTARY WORK WITH THE DRP

All the members of the DRP Association are volunteers i.e. voluntary workers, but the Constitution (Article 14.5) draws a distinction between Committee members and "volunteers who are not members of the Committee but whose names appear on the register of volunteers" and are termed "ordinary members of the Association". Article 14 of the Constitution, in general, deals with such Volunteers.

Ordinary members ("volunteers") have done invaluable work to help refugees and asylum seekers at the hostels in the greater Dun Laoghaire area over the first five years of our work. They have included persons - usually living in the Dun Laoghaire area - that could offer: foreign language skills, legal knowledge, experience in education and training, medical/para-medical and social welfare skills, former service in developing countries, skills in youth work, business, administration and accounts, fund raising and various other talents or experience essential to the success of our work.

As the First Annual Report of the DRP indicates, a Code of Conduct for Volunteers was adopted early on in the existence of the Association, when our work was with asylum seekers residing in the Dun Laoghaire hostels. That Code among other matters included provision for an Equal Opportunities Policy.

However, with the closure of all the hostels in the Dun Laoghaire area, the character of the work of the DRP has changed and the need for volunteers has greatly decreased. At present, the DRP is not recruiting new volunteers.

If the position changes, we will give notice on this website, indicate what skills or experience would be of most use to the DRP and our clients in the asylum community and make available a volunteer application form for completion.

Thank You
